Peykodasos Symi

Kato Symi, a village in the Viannos region, leaves a lasting impression on every visitor thanks to its lush greenery and abundant water sources.

The famous pine forest surrounding the area—where holm oaks are less common—gives the landscape a distinct woodland character, something rarely found in eastern Crete.

According to the Heraklion Forest Service, the forest spans nearly 10,000 stremmata (approximately 1,000 hectares), offering breathtaking natural scenery.

Built in a verdant valley filled with various tree species, the village carries the historical weight of the once-martyred Viannos province. As one moves away from the settlement, the dominance of the pine trees becomes more apparent, with the forest gradually revealing its grandeur.

A rural dirt road leads to the starting point of a well-maintained uphill trail, guiding visitors into the heart of the pine forest. Hikers can enjoy walking among stretches of both dense and sparse tree formations.

At the end of the trail lies the awe-inspiring “Koutelo tou Paradeisou” (“Cliff of Paradise”), a natural balcony offering panoramic views of the entire region. There, a circular stone structure with a built-in bench provides a resting spot. It once had a wooden roof, which was unfortunately torn down by strong winds.

From this elevated point, one can gaze upon the green landscape, the villages and forests of Viannos, the South Cretan Sea to one side, and the towering peaks of Mount Dikti to the other.

Those wishing to continue their hike can make their way to the magnificent Omalos Plateau of Viannos, rounding off an unforgettable journey through nature.
