In 2004, Savvas Petrakis conceived the idea of creating a Museum of Fine Arts in Keratokampos and managed to persuade the most prominent visual artists of contemporary Greek art to create works of high aesthetic value and donate them to the Viannos Art Gallery. Many of these works were inspired by the natural beauty of the Viannos landscape, the region’s rich cultural heritage, and its significant historical background.
A key supporter of this endeavor was Nikos Kessanlis, one of the most important representatives of modernism in painting.
In 2005, the first exhibition of approximately 80 works was inaugurated in an old carob warehouse by the sea, which was suitably renovated to temporarily house the artworks.
The official opening took place in August, with the presence of Marina Lambraki-Plaka, who actively supported this initiative in every possible way.
In October of the same year, the first collection of works was presented in an album at the “Stoa tou Vivliou” in Athens.
In May 2006, an exhibition of the works was organized at the Basilica of St. Mark.
With funding from the Region of Crete, the dream became a reality. Since 2008, approximately 200 works have been housed in a dedicated space built on the ruins of an old factory, which was donated to the Cultural Association of Keratokampos – Kapsaloi “I Vigla.” The gallery was inaugurated by the then President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Karolos Papoulias.
