Viannos Art Gallery "Savvas Petrakis"
Nestled in the picturesque village of Keratokampos, the Viannos Art Gallery, also known as the "Savvas Petrakis" Gallery, stands as a vibrant testament to the rich artistic heritage of Crete. Founded in 2004 by the visionary Savvas Petrakis, this gallery was born from a passion for the fine arts and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and cultural significance of the region. Petrakis successfully rallied a host of prominent contemporary Greek artists, inviting them to contribute high-quality works that draw inspiration from Crete's stunning landscapes, historical richness, and unique cultural tapestry.
A Journey Through Art and History
The gallery's inception was significantly bolstered by the support of Nikos Kessanlis, an esteemed figure in modernist painting, whose commitment helped propel this ambitious project forward. When the gallery first opened its doors in 2005, it showcased an impressive collection of approximately 80 artworks within the charming setting of a renovated carob warehouse overlooking the sea. The opening ceremony, graced by the presence of Marina Lambraki-Plaka, marked a pivotal moment in the cultural landscape of Viannos.
The gallery's influence soon extended beyond its local roots, with a collection album presented at "Stoa tou Vivliou" in Athens by October 2005. In May 2006, the gallery organized a significant exhibition at the Basilica of St. Mark, further solidifying its role as a beacon of contemporary art in Greece.
A Permanent Home for Creativity
Thanks to generous funding from the Crete Region, the gallery found its permanent home in 2008, housed within a beautifully renovated factory space. This new facility now proudly displays around 200 works of art, offering visitors a deeper glimpse into the creativity and talent that thrives in this region. The grand inauguration of the permanent gallery was attended by then-President Karolos Papoulias, underscoring the significance of this cultural landmark.
