A few meters before entering the village of Kato Viannos in Heraklion, one can find the cemetery church dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ, celebrated on August 6th. The church stands at the westernmost edge of the fertile plain of Viannos, one of the most productive areas in the region. It was built during the Venetian rule in Crete, a period when many magnificent churches were constructed on the island.
The exterior of the church is simple, but its interior preserves fragments of old frescoes. Despite the wear of time, these frescoes remain impressive and worthy of admiration. Among the depicted figures, one can distinguish Saint Mammas, the rare Saint Polycarp, and the ever-present horse-mounted saints. Dominating the sanctuary is the image of Christ, radiating spiritual reverence.
