The Church of Saint George is located in the abandoned settlement of Ano Symi in the Ierapetra region, near Kato Symi in the Viannos region. The church is dedicated to Saint George the Drunkard, celebrated on November 3rd. Initially built as a single-aisled church, a transverse aisle was later added. According to a dedicatory inscription, the decoration of the church was sponsored by a devout individual named “Georgios,” while the construction of the transverse aisle was funded by “Konstantinos Froulas” and his son Thomas.
The original church features frescoes painted by the iconographer Manuel Fokas, dating back to before the mid-15th century. It shares stylistic similarities with other churches, such as Saint George in Emparos and Saint Constantine in Avdou. The transverse aisle, also decorated by Manuel Fokas, contains frescoes from 1453, which are considered among the final works of this renowned artist of the Palaiologan art tradition.
