Omalos Plateau of Viannos

The Omalos Plateau of Viannos is located on the southern slopes of Mount Dikti, near the Afentis Christos peak (2,141m), approximately 60 km southeast of Heraklion. The easiest access is via a forest dirt road from Kato Symi, though there are also other scenic routes worth exploring. One alternative road connects Ano Viannos with Kefalovrysi, passing beneath the Pantouras peak (1,513m), while a third route begins from the village of Miliaradon, near Emparos, running parallel to the dramatic Ergani Gorge.

Though less known than the famous Omalos Plateau in Chania, this smaller but equally charming plateau offers an authentic experience of Crete’s rugged wilderness. Some refer to it as “Little Omalos” to distinguish it. It is an excellent destination for day trips, surrounded by impressive mountains, gorges, and traditional villages. Several hiking trails start from here, including paths from Kato Symi, Kefalovrysi, and the ascent to Afentis Christos.

The plateau has no tourist facilities except for the small chapel of the Holy Spirit. It is primarily used by shepherds during the summer months. In winter, the landscape transforms as snow blankets the area, creating a breathtaking scene. When the snow melts, a small seasonal lake forms at the center of the plateau, lasting until summer.

The Omalos of Viannos is also known in literature, as it was the grazing ground of the famous character Patouchas, the protagonist of Ioannis Kondylakis’ novel of the same name.
